Xiangyang’s old city walls along the Han River are something else—walking the ramparts at sunset with locals flying kites gives you that perfect mix of history and everyday life. The beef noodle shops near the riverfront serve up broth so rich and spicy it’ll have you sweating even in winter. Public buses are cheap and reliable, though I preferred renting a bike to zip through the maze of alleyways near the ancient bell tower. The city has this laid-back energy where modern high-rises don’t overshadow its deep-rooted charm.
