Surabaya has its charms, but it’s not the most polished city I’ve been to. The colonial architecture around the old town is interesting, but a lot of it feels neglected, with peeling paint and uneven sidewalks. The traffic is relentless—crossing major roads feels like an extreme sport, and public transport isn’t much help. That said, the food scene is underrated; I stumbled on a few warungs serving killer soto ayam tucked between the unremarkable storefronts. The people are warm, but the city lacks the energy of Jakarta or the charm of Yogyakarta—it’s just kind of there.
