Sendai’s tree-lined boulevards give it this relaxed, almost European vibe—unexpected but so refreshing after Tokyo’s intensity. The zunda mochi here is next-level; sweet, creamy, and sold at little stands near Zuihoden Mausoleum, where the lush gardens make you forget you’re in a city. Locals are warm without being overbearing, happy to chat if you stumble through some basic Japanese. Even the subway feels calm and efficient, never packed like bigger cities. Perfect mix of culture and ease.

1The streets in Sendai felt oddly empty for a city this size, even in the downtown area. Most restaurants I passed closed shockingly early, and the few izakayas open had zero atmosphere—just tired salarymen drinking alone. The famous zunda mochi was fine, but not worth the trip when other cities do street food better. Even the historic sites like Aoba Castle felt underwhelming, just a few stones on a hill with no real presence. The whole place had this weird, half-asleep energy, like everyone had already given up by 8 PM. Wouldn’t go back.
