Kobe, the capital of Hyōgo Prefecture in Japan, is a vibrant port city with a population of approximately 1.5 million. Known for its scenic waterfront, international flair, and iconic Kobe beef, it blends modernity with historic charm. Situated in the Kansai region, it offers a mix of urban energy and natural beauty, including views of Mount Rokko.

  • Walking around Kobe felt oddly sterile compared to other Japanese cities—it’s clean and safe, sure, but there’s not much soul. The waterfront area tries too hard to feel cosmopolitan, with generic cafes and overpriced tourist shops that lack any real charm. Even the famous beef, while delicious, feels like a racket with how much they charge for a few slivers of meat. The city just doesn’t justify the hype. Public transport is decent, but the layout makes getting around needlessly complicated if you’re not near the main stations. And for a place known for its international vibe, the nightlife is surprisingly tame—most places shut down early, leaving you wandering empty streets by midnight. The 1995 earthquake might have reshaped the city, but the rebuild left it feeling more like a business park than a lively urban center. If you want history or energy, you’re better off in Kyoto or Osaka. Kobe just left me cold.
