  • Hiroshima has this incredible mix of resilience and peace that you feel everywhere. The Peace Memorial Park is haunting but beautiful, and the locals treat it with such quiet respect. I grabbed okonomiyaki from a tiny stand near the park—crispy, savory, and way better than any I’ve had elsewhere. The tram system is simple and cheap, perfect for hopping between the modern downtown and the quieter riverside spots. Even with its history, the city feels hopeful and alive. The oyster stalls near Miyajima are a must—fresh, briny, and grilled right in front of you. Walking across the floating torii gate at low tide was surreal, like stepping into a postcard. People here are warm without being overbearing, happy to chat but never pushy. Hiroshima moves at its own pace, and I loved that about it. The rebuilt city has this interesting blend of sleek glass buildings and pockets of old-school charm. I spent an afternoon in a tucked-away coffee shop where the owner played jazz records and talked about the city’s recovery. It’s not flashy, but there’s so much depth here if you take the time to look.
