Novosibirsk, Russia's third-largest city, serves as the administrative center of Novosibirsk Oblast and the Siberian Federal District. With a population of around 1.6 million, it is a bustling hub in Siberia, known for its vibrant culture and strategic importance in the region. The city combines urban energy with the vast, untamed landscapes of Siberia.

The train station in Novosibirsk is impressive, but that’s about the only thing that stood out. The city felt bleak, especially in winter—endless Soviet-era apartment blocks under gray skies, sidewalks slick with ice nobody bothered to clear. Locals seemed indifferent at best, cold at worst; good luck getting a smile out of a server or shop clerk. Even the food was disappointing—reheated pelmeni and overpriced, watery borscht in most places I tried. The metro was efficient, but after a couple days, I ran out of reasons to stay.

1Walking through Novosibirsk felt like stepping into a city that effortlessly blends Soviet-era grandeur with a modern, bustling energy. The Ob River promenade was a highlight—calm and scenic, perfect for a stroll with locals who seemed genuinely proud of their city. The architecture here is striking, especially the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, which looks like it was plucked straight out of a fairy tale. Public transport was surprisingly efficient, and I never waited more than a few minutes for a tram. The food scene was a pleasant surprise too; hearty Siberian dishes like pelmeni warmed me up in the chilly weather. Novosibirsk has this unpretentious charm that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special.
1The energy in Novosibirsk is unexpected and refreshing—this isn’t just another grey Siberian city. The opera house is stunning, way grander than you’d guess for a city this far east, and the performances I caught were surprisingly world-class. Public transport was dirt cheap and efficient, even when I took the metro to that quirky Lenin Square station with its Soviet-era mosaics still intact. Ate some of the best pelmeni of my life at a no-frills canteen near the Ob River, where locals chatted me up about hockey like we were old friends. The cold bites, but the city’s got warmth.
