The night markets in New Taipei City are unreal—way less crowded than Taipei’s but just as delicious. Stumbled on a stall frying up sweet potato balls so crispy outside, molten inside, and the owner kept tossing me free samples. Love how the MRT connects everything; hopped from Yonghe’s豆浆 alley to Tamsui’s sunset pier in under an hour. The mix of temple rooftops peeking between apartment blocks gives the skyline this chaotic charm.

1New Taipei City surprised me with how vibrant and diverse it is—way more than just Taipei’s neighbor. The night markets here feel less touristy, especially the one near Yonghe, where I had the creamiest taro balls and stinky tofu that actually won me over. The mix of old temples tucked between modern high-rises gives the city this cool contrast, like history and future colliding. And the MRT makes it super easy to hop between districts without dealing with traffic. I stayed in Banqiao, and the riverside parks were perfect for evening walks with locals flying kites or jogging. The city doesn’t have Taipei’s glitz, but that’s the charm—it’s real, lived-in, and way more affordable. Found this little beef noodle spot near the station where the broth was so rich I went back twice. For a city this big, it’s surprisingly green—hiking Elephant Mountain was a highlight, with skyline views that rival Taipei’s but with way fewer crowds. People here were chill, happy to help even when my Mandarin failed me. New Taipei doesn’t shout for attention, but it’s got its own rhythm, and I really vibed with it.
