  • Nanjing’s mix of history and modern energy is fascinating—walking from the Ming Dynasty city walls straight into a bustling shopping district feels like time travel. The duck blood and vermicelli soup from a tiny alley stall near Confucius Temple was shockingly good, spicy and rich. Even the metro felt efficient, with announcements in clear English, which made getting around easy. I spent hours just wandering through the Zhongshan Mountain greenery, stumbling on quiet temples tucked between the trees. The locals were patient with my terrible Mandarin, even laughing with me when I butchered simple phrases. There’s a warmth here that balances the weight of its heavy history. Xuanwu Lake at sunset was unreal—joggers, old men playing chess, street performers, all against that hazy golden light. Even with its size, the city never felt overwhelming. The preserved historical sites somehow don’t clash with the new developments; it all just flows together.
