  • Walking through Jieyang’s old streets, I was struck by the blend of bustling markets and slow-paced, traditional life—it’s a city that hasn’t lost its charm to modernization. The local Teochew cuisine is incredible; I still dream about the silky-smooth rice noodles drenched in rich, aromatic broth from a tiny stall near the river. And the people? Warm and unassuming, always happy to chat over tea even if my Mandarin was rough. The mix of ancestral temples and everyday chaos makes it feel like time moves differently here. --- Exploring Jieyang’s waterfront at sunset, with the hum of scooters and the smell of grilled oysters in the air, made me realize how much character this place has. The city’s not polished for tourists, and that’s what I loved—just authentic, everyday life with incredible food and hidden pockets of history. Even the bus rides were an adventure, packed with locals heading home, baskets of fresh produce balanced on their laps. --- I wasn’t expecting much from Jieyang, but its energy won me over—lively without being overwhelming, historic without feeling frozen in time. The night markets are a must, especially for the oyster omelets and sweet sesame paste desserts. And don’t miss the Chao opera performances if you get the chance; the costumes and music pull you right into Teochew culture. For a smaller Chinese city, it punches way above its weight
