Hezhou surprised me with its laid-back charm—strolling through the old town, you can still see traditional Cantonese-style shophouses mixed in with modern buildings. The night market near the river is perfect for trying local snacks like rice noodle rolls and tea-infused meats without the tourist crowds of bigger cities. Public buses were cheap and reliable, though learning a few basic Mandarin phrases helped when venturing outside the main areas. For a smaller Chinese city, it felt refreshingly unhurried.
