  • The canals in Suqian give it this peaceful, almost nostalgic charm—nothing like the bustle of bigger Chinese cities. I loved grabbing steamed buns from a tiny stall near the old bridges and watching locals play checkers in the shade. The place feels untouched, in the best way. Suqian’s Sihu Scenic Area was a surprise—lush greenery, quiet pavilions, and hardly any crowds. Perfect for a slow morning walk with tea in hand. Even the street food here felt simpler and more honest than the touristy spots elsewhere. I stumbled on a weekend market near the city center where vendors sold everything from handwoven baskets to spicy crayfish. No pushy sales, just friendly bargaining. It’s rare to find a city this relaxed. The bus system was surprisingly efficient—clean, cheap, and easy to figure out even with minimal Mandarin. Took me straight from downtown to the Hongze Lake wetlands in under an hour. No hassle, no stress. At night, the riverside lights up with strings of lanterns, and families gather to chat under the trees. No wild nightlife, just a cozy, communal vibe. Felt like seeing a side of China most travelers miss.
