  Ganzhou's riverside promenade is peaceful in the evenings, with locals practicing tai chi and street vendors selling decent grilled skewers. But the city feels stuck between old and new—some crumbling alleyways have charm, while the half-finished high-rises just look bleak. The bus system is cheap but confusing, with no English signage, and good luck finding a café that isn’t a generic chain. The Hakka cultural sites are interesting if you dig deep, but the city doesn’t exactly roll out the welcome mat for tourists.
