  • Zhanjiang surprised me with its laid-back coastal vibe—way more relaxed than other southern Chinese cities. Strolling along the tree-lined streets near the old French quarter, I loved stumbling on crumbling colonial buildings repurposed into quirky cafes. The seafood here is ridiculous; I ate the freshest scallops of my life at a no-name stall by the fishing port, grilled right over charcoal. Even the humidity felt part of the charm, especially with those ocean breezes rolling in at sunset. The locals have this unhurried, friendly energy—shopkeepers actually chat instead of rushing transactions. Found myself lingering over cheap lychee beers at open-air tables watching old men play chess. The city's not polished for tourists, which is exactly why it stuck with me. Took the slow ferry to Donghai Island just to kill an afternoon and ended up with the whole back deck to myself, watching fishing boats bob in the haze. Zhanjiang's the kind of place where plans dissolve in the best way.
