Datong is a major industrial city in northern China's Shanxi Province, known for its coal production and historical significance. With a population of around 1.85 million, it serves as an economic hub in the region. The city also boasts ancient Buddhist cave temples and sections of the Great Wall nearby.

Walking through the old city walls at sunrise is magical—the way the light hits the ancient stonework makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The Buddhist grottoes outside the city are jaw-dropping, with intricate carvings that have lasted centuries. Local noodle shops serve up steaming bowls of dao xiao mian for pennies, and the friendly vendors always seem to have a story about the dish’s history. Even the coal-heavy industrial side gives Datong this rough-around-the-edges charm—it’s unpolished but full of character.

1Datong surprised me—way more than just a coal city. The Yungang Grottoes blew my mind, those ancient Buddhas carved right into the cliffs with such detail. The rebuilt Ming-era city walls look epic at sunset, especially when the lights come on. Street food here is hearty northern stuff—try the fried dough twists with warm soy milk from morning vendors. Locals were unexpectedly chatty for a smaller Chinese city, one uncle even walked me to a bus stop when I looked lost.
1I found Datong to be a bit of a letdown. The air quality was awful—walking around felt like breathing through a dusty cloth. The public transportation system was unreliable, with buses arriving late or not at all, and taxis seemed to overcharge tourists. While the Yungang Grottoes were impressive, they were crowded with aggressive vendors hawking cheap souvenirs, which really ruined the experience. The city itself felt like it was stuck in a time warp, with crumbling infrastructure and a lack of modern amenities. Overall, I left feeling like I’d wasted my time.
