Bozhou surprised me with its laid-back charm—wandering the old town’s narrow alleys, I kept stumbling upon hidden temples and family-run herb shops, remnants of its history as a traditional medicine hub. The locals were quick to offer tea or point me toward their favorite lamb soup stalls, where rich broths simmered all day. Even the bus system was oddly efficient for a smaller city, and I never waited more than 10 minutes. At night, the riverfront lights up with impromptu mahjong games and street vendors selling candied hawthorns—simple, unpretentious, and exactly what I needed.
