Biên Hòa is a bustling Vietnamese city in Đồng Nai Province with over 1.2 million residents. Located just northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, it serves as an important industrial and transportation hub in southern Vietnam. The city offers a mix of urban energy and local Vietnamese culture, though few major tourist attractions.

Walking along the Đồng Nai River at sunset is one of my favorite things to do in Biên Hòa—the water reflects the sky, and the street vendors start setting up, filling the air with the smell of grilled meats and fresh herbs. The city has this comfortable, lived-in vibe where motorbikes weave through markets piled high with tropical fruit, and no one seems to be in too much of a hurry. The coffee here is some of the strongest and cheapest I’ve had in Vietnam, perfect for sipping at sidewalk stalls while watching the city wake up. It’s not polished for tourists, and that’s exactly why I keep coming back.

1Wandering through Biên Hòa’s streets, I was struck by how lively the local markets are—stalls overflowing with fresh tropical fruit, sizzling street food, and the constant hum of bargaining. The Dong Nai River gives the city this peaceful contrast, perfect for an evening stroll after a day of exploring. The warmth of the locals really stood out too—so many shop owners and street vendors took time to chat, making me feel welcome. The food scene here is underrated. I stumbled upon this tiny roadside stall selling the most incredible bánh hỏi—delicate rice noodles with grilled pork and herbs, all for less than a dollar. Nightlife isn’t flashy, but the casual beer corners with groups laughing over cheap bia hơi give it a cozy charm. What I love about Biên Hòa is that it’s not polished for tourists—it’s just authentically itself. From the faded French colonial buildings to the motorbike-filled streets, it feels like a real slice of Vietnamese daily life. If you want hustle without the overwhelm of Saigon, this place nails it.
1Walking along the Đồng Nai River at dusk is something special—the water turns gold, and you can smell grilled pork skewers from the riverside stalls. The locals here have this easygoing warmth, always ready with a smile even if you're fumbling through basic Vietnamese. The traffic is chaotic, sure, but there's a rhythm to it, and the motorbike rides are weirdly exhilarating once you get used to them. The city’s got this unpretentious charm—no flashy attractions, just solid street food, buzzing coffee shops, and markets where haggling feels more like banter than bargaining.
