  Baotou surprised me with its mix of industrial energy and green spaces—those wide boulevards lined with trees make it feel less crowded than other Chinese cities. The locals were super warm, always eager to help when I got lost near the稀土高新区 area, even if my Mandarin was rough. The lamb hotpot at a small spot near my hotel was insanely good, rich broth and tender meat, way cheaper than bigger cities. And the contrast between the modern downtown and the nearby grasslands? Wild to see in one day.
