Zibo has this strange mix of industrial grit and quiet charm—walking past a row of smokestacks only to stumble onto a tucked-away dumpling spot with the most fragrant lamb buns. The city feels caught between eras, with some streets lined with drab Soviet-style blocks and others dotted with sleek new malls. Public transit gets you where you need to go, but the buses are packed during rush hour in a way that makes even short rides exhausting. Locals are reserved but helpful if you ask for directions, though don’t expect much nightlife beyond beer gardens and KTV spots that feel more functional than fun. It’s the kind of place that grows on you slowly, but never quite feels like a destination.
