Kunshan is a bustling county-level city in southeastern Jiangsu province, China, with over 2 million residents. It lies just west of Shanghai, benefiting from its proximity to the economic powerhouse while maintaining its own thriving economy.

Walking along Kunshan’s canals in the old town feels like stepping into a quiet watercolor painting—narrow alleys, arched bridges, and traditional teahouses tucked between modern buildings. The mix of old and new is seamless, and the locals have this unhurried warmth that makes even a short visit feel welcoming. The high-speed rail connection to Shanghai means you get big-city convenience without the chaos, plus the dumplings here are some of the freshest I’ve had in the region. Kunshan’s parks and green spaces are surprisingly lush for a city this size—perfect for morning walks where you’ll see tai chi groups and street calligraphers practicing near lotus ponds. The cost of living is reasonable, and even the mid-range restaurants serve dishes with way more care than you’d expect. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t shout about its charm but leaves you pleasantly surprised.

1I was surprised by how modern and well-planned Kunshan feels—the city has this sleek, almost futuristic vibe with wide boulevards and glass-fronted buildings. The Yangcheng Lake hairy crab is a must-try when in season, and the local xiaolongbao spots are some of the best I've had outside Shanghai. The high-speed rail makes it a breeze to pop into Suzhou or Shanghai, but Kunshan itself has a relaxed energy that’s perfect for unwinding. The canal-side walkways in the old town are a peaceful escape from the bustle, with little teahouses tucked between traditional buildings. Even though it’s close to major cities, Kunshan feels like its own place—less crowded but still lively, especially around the night markets. The locals were friendly, and I appreciated how clean and efficient everything was, from the metro to the shopping districts. Definitely worth a stop if you're exploring the Yangtze Delta.
