Zhongwei is a mid-sized city in China's Ningxia region, home to around 1.17 million residents. It sits along the Yellow River in northwestern China, known for its desert landscapes and historical Silk Road connections. The city blends modern development with traditional culture in this arid yet agriculturally productive region.

Zhongwei surprised me with its perfect blend of desert charm and modern convenience. Walking along the Yellow River at sunset, with the Tengger Desert stretching out in the distance, felt like stepping into a painting. The locals were incredibly warm, and I ended up chatting with an elderly couple at a street-side stall selling hand-pulled noodles—simple, flavorful, and ridiculously cheap. The city’s mix of traditional courtyard homes and sleek new developments gave it this unique vibe, like it’s embracing the future while holding onto its roots. And don’t even get me started on the Shapotou Scenic Area—riding a camel over the dunes was a bucket-list moment I’ll never forget. Zhongwei’s got this quiet, understated magic that makes you want to linger.

1Zhongwei has its charm, but it’s a bit hit or miss. The desert landscapes near Shapotou are stunning, and the camel rides were fun, but the city itself felt like it was still figuring itself out. The food was decent—lots of hearty noodle dishes—but nothing particularly memorable. Public transportation was reliable, though getting around felt sluggish at times. The locals were friendly, but there wasn’t much of a nightlife scene to speak of. It’s worth a visit if you’re passing through, but don’t expect to be blown away.
