The metro extension makes it way more convenient than people assume, and I never waited more than five minutes for a train. Local hole-in-the-wall spots near Zhongshan Road do these pan-fried soup dumplings that ruined all other dumplings for me – crispy bottoms, steaming hot broth, for like 12 yuan. The Sheshan area gives you temples and hiking without the tourist crowds of bigger cities. Honestly expected a sleepy suburb, but there's a sneaky amount to do here without Shanghai's chaos.

The mix of old temples and modern university campuses gives it an interesting layered feel – like the city’s quietly holding onto tradition while the students zoom by on shared bikes. Best part? You can grab a steaming xiaolongbao from a streetside stall for less than the metro fare back to central Shanghai.
