  Haikou's brutalist architecture and endless construction sites make it feel more like a work zone than a destination. The humidity clings to you the second you step outside, and the lack of reliable public transport means you’re stuck sweating in taxis most of the time. Even the night markets, usually a highlight in Chinese cities, feel half-abandoned with the same few mediocre seafood stalls repeating down every block. Maybe it’s just a transit hub for Hainan, but I can’t see why anyone would stay longer than necessary.
