Goyang-si felt like a city stuck in limbo—it’s neither bustling enough to feel alive nor quiet enough to be peaceful. The public transportation was a headache, with buses running late and stations feeling outdated and cramped. I tried exploring the local food scene, but most places seemed to cater to chain restaurants, leaving little room for authentic Korean flavors. The architecture was a mix of bland modern buildings and half-finished developments, making the cityscape feel uninspired. Even the much-touted Ilsan Lake Park felt underwhelming, with overcrowded paths and litter scattered around. Overall, Goyang-si lacked the charm or energy I was hoping for in a city of its size.

1Goyang-si surprised me with how green and spacious it feels for a city so close to Seoul. The Ilsan Lake Park was a perfect escape—walking by the water with street performers and food stalls made weekends feel lively without the usual big-city chaos. The subway connects easily to Seoul, but the local vibe here is way more relaxed, with cozy cafes tucked between modern high-rises. And the annual flower festival? Absolutely worth planning a trip around—the colors are unreal.
1The residential neighborhoods in Goyang-si have this peaceful, almost suburban feel, but with the convenience of being so close to Seoul. I loved strolling around Ilsan Lake Park in the evenings—the walking paths are well-maintained, and the city lights reflecting on the water make for such a relaxing atmosphere. Plus, the food scene here is surprisingly diverse, with little family-run Korean BBQ spots tucked away in the alleys that serve the most tender galbi. It’s the perfect balance between quiet living and easy access to big-city energy. Goyang-si has this great mix of modern and traditional—you’ll see sleek high-rises right next to old-school markets where vendors sell homemade kimchi and fresh produce. The KINTEX convention center brings in cool exhibitions, but my favorite spot is Janghang Market for its no-frills street food. The tteokbokki here has just the right amount of spice, and the ahjummas running the stalls are always friendly. It’s not as crowded as Seoul, so everything feels more laid-back. One thing that stood out to me was how clean and efficient the transportation is—buses run frequently, and even the subway stations feel spacious and well-organized. I took a day trip to Haengju Fortress and was surprised by how green and peaceful it was, with great views of the Han River. Goyang-si doesn’t get as much attention as Seoul, but that
1Goyang-si surprised me with its perfect mix of urban energy and green spaces. The Ilsan Lake Park is a gem—great for morning walks with the water shimmering under the sun. Public transport was smooth, and the locals were genuinely helpful when I got turned around. The street food near Kintex had some of the crispiest hotteok I’ve ever tasted. I loved how modern high-rises sat alongside traditional markets, like the one near Jeongbalsan Station. Even though it’s a busy city, there was a relaxed vibe, especially in the cafes near La Festa—perfect for people-watching with a good cup of dalgona coffee. Would definitely come back. The annual Goyang International Flower Festival was a highlight—bursts of color everywhere, and the atmosphere was so lively. Even without big tourist crowds, the city felt vibrant and well-kept. Prices were reasonable too, especially compared to downtown Seoul just a short metro ride away.
1Goyang-si surprised me with how green and peaceful it felt despite being so close to Seoul. The Ilsan Lake Park was a perfect spot to unwind—wide open spaces, a serene lake, and locals jogging or biking everywhere. The food scene was a highlight too; I stumbled into a cozy alley with family-run restaurants serving some of the best bibimbap I’ve had. The subway system made getting around effortless, and the locals were warm and helpful, even with my limited Korean. It’s a city that balances modernity with a laid-back charm—definitely worth exploring.
