Fes, Morocco is a vibrant city in the Fès-Meknès region with over 1.1 million residents. Known for its historic medina and rich cultural heritage, it offers an authentic Moroccan experience. As one of the country's largest cities, it blends bustling urban life with deep-rooted traditions.

Wandering through Fes’ medina feels like stepping into another century—narrow alleys, hidden courtyards, and the scent of spices drifting from tiny food stalls. The tanneries are unforgettable, not just for the vibrant dye pits but for the centuries-old techniques still in use. Getting lost here is part of the charm, though a friendly local usually points me back toward the main souk. The food in Fes is some of the best I’ve had in Morocco—rich tagines, flaky pastilla, and mint tea poured from a height in every café. Even simple street bread tastes incredible when it’s fresh from a wood-fired oven. Prices are fair, especially if you venture just outside the tourist-heavy areas. What really stands out is the craftsmanship—intricate zellige tilework, hand-stitched leather, and brass lanterns filling the shops. It’s rare to see a city where traditional artisanship feels so alive rather than just for show. And despite the crowds, the pace stays unhurried, with locals happy to chat over tea.

2Fes is fascinating but exhausting. The Medina is a maze of narrow alleys filled with vibrant markets and historic mosques, but it’s easy to get lost, and the constant hustle can be overwhelming. The food stalls serve delicious tagines and fresh bread, but finding a clean, comfortable spot to eat takes some effort. The architecture is stunning, especially the intricate tile work at Bou Inania Madrasa, but the upkeep of some sites feels lacking. Public transportation is limited, so walking is often the only option, which can be tiring in the heat. The locals are friendly, but the persistent street vendors can wear you down quickly. It’s a city that rewards patience, but it’s not for everyone.
