Yamoussoukro is the capital city of Ivory Coast, serving as both a political hub and an autonomous district. With a population of around 275,686, it is known for its modern infrastructure and significant cultural landmarks. The city lies in the central region of the country, offering a blend of urban development and local traditions.

Wandering around Yamoussoukro feels surreal—you don’t expect a city this size to have the largest church in the world, but the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace towers over everything. The stained glass inside catches the light in ways that make the whole place glow. The streets are quiet compared to Abidjan, but the laid-back vibe makes it easy to chat with locals at roadside stands selling grilled fish and attiéké.

1Wandering around Yamoussoukro feels like stepping into an unexpected architectural wonderland—the massive Basilica of Our Lady of Peace dominates the skyline, gleaming white against the green landscape. The streets are wide and calm compared to Abidjan’s chaos, making it easy to explore by bike or on foot. Locals here move at a slower pace, always ready with a warm greeting, and the roadside grilled fish stalls near the lake serve up some of the freshest, simplest meals I’ve had in Ivory Coast.
2I was blown away by the sheer scale of the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace - it's one of those places you have to see to believe. The marble floors and stained glass feel surreal in the middle of Côte d'Ivoire's political capital. Locals were surprisingly chill about tourists gawking at this extravagant landmark their former president built. The contrast between the basilica's grandeur and the quiet, palm-lined boulevards gives Yamoussoukro this odd peaceful energy. Spotted schoolkids playing football in empty roundabout circles at sunset – not something you'd see in Abidjan. Stopped at a roadside stand selling alloco (fried plantains) so crispy and spicy I went back twice. The vendor laughed at my terrible French but kept the portions generous. There's an unpretentious warmth here that big cities lose. Wasn't expecting much nightlife but found a bar near the presidential district with live zouglou music where old men taught me dance steps between sips of bangui. The city hums rather than roars after dark. Took a moto-taxi at dawn to see crocodiles in the presidential palace lake – the driver knew exactly when the keepers feed them. That mix of wild and weirdly bureaucratic sums up Yamoussoukro perfectly.
