Wellington, New Zealand's charming capital, offers a compact urban experience with stunning harbor views and a vibrant arts scene. Home to around 381,900 residents, this hilly coastal city boasts world-class museums and a thriving café culture. As New Zealand's political heart, Wellington combines natural beauty with urban sophistication in the North Island's southern tip.

Wellington’s compact charm won me over. You can walk almost everywhere, from the vibrant waterfront cafes to the quirky boutiques on Cuba Street—the coffee scene here is unreal, with little independent roasters tucked into every corner. Even on windy days (and there are plenty), the energy of this city keeps things lively, especially when you catch live music spilling out of basement bars. I loved how the hills frame the city—you’re never far from a lookout with sweeping harbor views. The compact CBD makes it feel like a big town rather than a capital, but don’t be fooled—there’s a serious food and arts scene packed in here. Even the public transport is decent, which is rare for a city this size. The people here have this laid-back but creative vibe—you can strike up a conversation with anyone, whether it’s about craft beer or the latest art exhibit. And yeah, the wind will mess up your hair, but when you’re sipping a flat white with the harbor right there, you stop caring. The mix of historic timber buildings and modern architecture gives Wellington real character—it’s not trying too hard, it just works. Even the weekend market by the waterfront feels like a local secret, with fresh produce and street food that puts bigger cities to shame. I left wishing I’d stayed longer.

1Wellington has its charms—great coffee, a compact downtown, and that waterfront walk is lovely on a rare sunny day. But man, the wind never lets up, and the hills make getting around without a car a real workout. The food scene tries hard, but prices feel steep for what you get. Cool little city, just don't expect it to wow you. The vibe here is oddly split—creative energy from all the artsy types, but also this weird bureaucratic stiffness, probably from all the government workers. Te Papa museum is a standout, though. Otherwise, after a few days you start noticing how small it really is. Great craft beer options, but good luck finding late-night eats after 10pm. The public transport is decent when it runs on time, which isn’t often. Cute place to visit, but I can see why some people find it claustrophobic after a while.
