The blend of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian architecture in Sarajevo is unlike anywhere else—walking from Baščaršija’s cobblestone alleys to grand European-style buildings in just minutes feels like time travel. I spent hours sipping strong Bosnian coffee in tiny cafes, watching the city’s easygoing rhythm unfold. The locals are warm but never pushy, happy to chat if you linger over a cevapi plate. Even the trams rumbling past the Latin Bridge add to the charm—old-world and lived-in, not polished for tourists.

1The public transport in Sarajevo is a nightmare—unreliable schedules, overcrowded trams, and broken ticket machines seem to be the norm. Walking isn’t much better, with uneven sidewalks and potholes everywhere. The air quality in winter gets so bad from coal heating that it’s hard to even enjoy the historic center without coughing. And while the coffee culture is strong, good luck finding a café where the staff doesn’t act like you’re inconveniencing them by ordering.
