Wandering through San José’s chaotic streets, I loved stumbling into cozy cafes tucked between colonial-era buildings—strong Costa Rican coffee in hand, watching the city’s mix of students, artists, and businesspeople buzz by. The Central Market was a highlight, packed with stalls selling fresh tropical fruit and casados, the perfect spot to soak up local life. For a capital city, San José surprised me with its walkability—you can hit museums, parks, and open-air plazas in a single afternoon, though the hills definitely gave my calves a workout. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum was smaller than expected but absolutely gleaming with intricate artifacts. Nightlife here isn’t flashy, but I found a great little bar where locals sipped chiliguaros (spicy tomato shots!) and debated soccer with infectious passion. The energy’s unpretentious and warm—just like the people.
