Roseau feels like it hasn't changed in decades—and not in a charming way. The streets are chaotic, with potholes deep enough to swallow a tire, and sidewalks that disappear without warning. The heat is oppressive, and the few cafes with AC are overpriced for what you get. I tried to enjoy the waterfront, but the smell of diesel from idling boats ruined it. Even the colorful buildings can’t make up for the general neglect.

1Roseau feels like a hidden Caribbean gem—compact but bursting with character. The colorful wooden buildings along the bay have this charming, slightly faded elegance, and the streets hum with local chatter and reggae drifting from open doorways. Grabbed fresh coconut bread from a street vendor near the Old Market—still warm, still perfect.
1Roseau is the kind of small Caribbean capital where you can stroll everywhere, past pastel-colored wooden houses and lush gardens spilling onto the sidewalks. The mix of French Creole and British colonial vibes gives the architecture real charm, especially around the Old Market area. Locals actually stop to chat—none of that big-city rush—and the Friday night fish fry at the waterfront is pure island energy. Sure, some roads could use work, but that just adds to the unfiltered, lived-in character.
1Roseau surprised me with its laid-back Caribbean charm—narrow streets lined with colorful wooden houses, the smell of fresh spices drifting from market stalls, and the constant hum of soca music from passing cars. The locals were warm and quick to share tips on where to find the best coconut bread or hidden waterfalls nearby. Even the chaotic mini-bus system felt like part of the adventure once I got the hang of yelling "next stop!" to the driver. The Botanical Gardens were my quiet escape, with massive banyan trees and the occasional parrot squawking overhead. It’s not polished or touristy, and that’s exactly why I liked it.
