  • Rome overwhelms in the best and worst ways. The sheer density of history around every corner is staggering—you’ll turn a random alley and bump into a 2,000-year-old column just sitting there. But that also means crowds everywhere, even in shoulder season, elbowing past you to snap selfies with the Trevi Fountain. The food is sometimes transcendent (carbonara at a tiny trattoria near Campo de’ Fiori ruined all other pasta for me) but just as often overpriced and mediocre, especially near tourist traps. Public transport is a gamble—buses show up when they feel like it, but walking means constantly dodging scooters. Still, sipping an Aperol Spritz as the golden light hits the Pantheon at dusk? Yeah, that part’s perfect.
