Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, is a lively coastal city with around 137,868 residents. Its scenic beaches and relaxed atmosphere make it a charming gateway to the islands.

Walking along Quebra Canela beach at sunset is pure magic—locals playing footvolley in the golden light, the sound of Kriolu music drifting from beach bars. The city feels alive but never rushed, with colorful colonial buildings leaning into the ocean breeze. The cachupa at the little stall near Praça Alexandre Albuquerque ruined all other versions of the dish for me—rich, smoky, and served with a side of easy laughter from the cook. Public minibuses are chaotic but somehow efficient once you learn the hand signals.

1Praia's streets feel half-finished, with random piles of rubble and broken sidewalks that make walking anywhere a chore. Even the waterfront area, which should be nice, has an odd emptiness—just a few overpriced cafes and no real energy. The traffic is chaotic, but public transport barely exists, leaving you either sweating in shared taxis or paying too much for private ones. I expected more from a capital city—there’s just not much to do unless you’re fine sitting in a hotel all day.
1The oceanfront promenade in Praia is the perfect place to watch the sunset—locals jogging, kids playing soccer, fishermen bringing in the day’s catch. The grilled lobster at the little beachside stalls is simple but incredible, especially with a cold Strela beer. The city has this laid-back island energy, but the colorful colonial buildings in the Plateau district remind you there’s history here too.
