Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, is a vibrant city blending modern life with historic charm. Located in the island's central region, it offers a mix of cultural heritage and bustling urban energy. With over 200,000 residents, it serves as the political and economic heart of Cyprus.

Nicosia has this strange charm, but it’s hard to ignore the lingering tension of the divided city. The old town is picturesque with its Venetian walls and narrow alleys, but it feels oddly quiet for a capital city. The food was decent—I had a decent mezze platter at a local tavern—but nothing blew me away, and prices felt a bit steep for what you get. Crossing into the Turkish side was fascinating, but the process felt unnecessarily bureaucratic. It’s worth a visit if you’re curious about its unique history, but don’t expect a vibrant or bustling atmosphere.

1Crossing the UN buffer zone in Nicosia was surreal—one minute I was in the modern Republic of Cyprus, the next wandering past faded Ottoman buildings in the north. The old Venetian walls still encircle the city, giving it this layered, time-capsule feel. Best €3 I ever spent was on a steaming plate of halloumi and sheftalia from a streetside grill near Ledra Street. The mix of Greek and Turkish influences makes the food and culture here unlike anywhere else on the island.
