Mogadishu surprised me with its resilience—the city hums with energy, from the lively fish markets along the coast to the restored colonial buildings in the old quarter. The ocean breeze makes the heat bearable, and the locals welcomed me with warmth, always ready to share tea and stories. Walking along Liido Beach at sunset, with the call to prayer echoing over the water, was unforgettable. It's rough around the edges, sure, but there’s a raw beauty here you won’t find anywhere else. The rebuilding efforts are visible—new cafes and small businesses popping up, blending modern Somali culture with tradition. The city has a rhythm, chaotic but alive, and the fresh seafood is some of the best I’ve had, grilled right on the beach. You have to be mindful, but if you take the right precautions, Mogadishu rewards you with moments of genuine connection.

1Walking along Lido Beach at sunset is surprisingly peaceful, with fishermen hauling in their nets and kids playing in the shallow waves. But the city's energy shifts fast—by dark, most streets empty out, and the few open cafes feel tense with armed guards posted outside. The rebuilt Turkish-style mosques and Ottoman-influenced villas show glimpses of the city's past grandeur, but bullet holes still pockmark half the buildings. It's a place where you can sip strong spiced tea with chatty locals one minute, then get waved through another security checkpoint the next.
