Walking around Minsk feels like stepping into a perfectly preserved Soviet time capsule, but with a surprising modern energy. The wide boulevards and monumental Stalinist architecture give the city a grand, almost cinematic feel, especially around Independence Avenue. The metro is ridiculously clean and efficient, and it only costs pennies to ride. I lost track of how many times I stumbled upon cozy basement cafes serving hearty draniki potato pancakes with sour cream—simple but so satisfying. Locals were reserved at first but warmed up quickly once they realized I was genuinely curious about their city. For a capital, it feels oddly undiscovered by tourists, which makes exploring even more rewarding.

1The city feels eerily quiet for its size—wide, empty boulevards and blocky Soviet architecture make it feel more like a government compound than a living city. Locals keep to themselves, and there’s an uncomfortable tension in the air, like you’re being watched. Even the few decent restaurants serve bland, overpriced food, and nightlife is practically nonexistent unless you enjoy overpriced vodka bars with zero energy. Public transit is functional but joyless, just like everything else here. Wouldn’t come back.
