Wandering through Alfama’s narrow alleys, I got lost at least three times—but every wrong turn led to another hidden courtyard or a tiny tasca serving petiscos on chipped plates. The tram 28 rattling past felt like a mobile postcard. Lisbon’s charm is in its effortless decay, the way sunset turns peeling facades gold. Even the hills felt like a fair trade for those views. The pasteis de nata at that unmarked bakery near the miradouro ruined all other custard tarts for me. Crispy shell, still warm, with just enough cinnamon. It’s the kind of city where you plan to visit castles but end up drinking ginjinha on the curb instead, chatting with locals who treat you like a neighbor who just forgot their keys.
