Kisangani, located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a bustling city with a population of approximately 1.2 million. Situated in the Tshopo region, it serves as a key economic and transportation hub along the Congo River, connecting central and eastern parts of the country. The city is known for its vibrant markets and strategic importance in regional trade.

Kisangani surprised me—it’s got this raw, vibrant energy you don’t find in more polished cities. The Congo River is the heartbeat here, and watching the boats come and go at the port feels like seeing the city’s pulse. The street food near the market is next-level, especially the grilled fish with pili-pili—spicy, smoky, and fresh. Locals were warm, always ready to share a laugh or point me toward hidden spots. It’s chaotic but alive in the best way.

1Walking through Kisangani felt exhausting—the heat and humidity were relentless, and the streets were chaotic with little infrastructure to handle the crowds. The city’s colonial-era buildings are crumbling, and it’s hard to appreciate their history when basic maintenance is nonexistent. Public transport was a nightmare—overcrowded, unreliable, and with drivers who seemed to make up their own traffic rules. Even the famed Congo River, which should be a highlight, was inaccessible in most areas due to pollution and lack of proper walkways. I couldn’t wait to leave.
