Ecatepec de Morelos is a bustling city in central Mexico with over 1.6 million residents. Part of the State of Mexico, it offers urban energy and local culture just northeast of Mexico City.

Ecatepec is hectic in a way that feels exhausting rather than exciting. The street markets have a raw energy, and you can find cheap, decent tacos if you know where to look, but there’s not much charm to the place. Public transport is packed and unreliable, and the traffic is some of the worst I’ve dealt with. The people are resilient and friendly enough, but you get the sense everyone’s just trying to get through the day. It’s not somewhere I’d go out of my way to visit again. There are a few pockets with interesting murals and local culture if you dig deep, but most of the city feels like an endless sprawl of concrete and wire. Prices are low, but so is the appeal—this is more of a place where people live out of necessity than by choice. If you’re passing through, fine, but don’t expect much.
