Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is a bustling city in Eastern Europe with a population of nearly 1.9 million. Known for its vibrant culture and historic architecture, it serves as the country’s political, economic, and cultural hub. Visitors can explore its wide boulevards, green spaces, and a mix of old and modern influences.

Bucharest surprised me with its mix of grand Belle Époque buildings and gritty charm. The Old Town’s tiny wine bars spill onto cobbled streets, and you can still find a strong espresso for under a dollar if you know where to look. The subway is cheap and efficient, though the traffic aboveground is pure chaos. Loved stumbling upon hidden courtyards where locals chain-smoke and argue over backgammon. The city’s got this faded grandeur—crumbling facades next to restored palaces—that makes wandering around feel like a treasure hunt. Late nights in the Old Town mean cheap beers, live folk music, and strangers turning into friends by last call. Even the stray dogs have personality here. Energy prices in Bucharest are among the cheapest in Europe, making it a great place to work remotely or just live well on a budget. Winter can be harsh, but the Christmas markets and cozy, smoke-filled pubs more than make up for it. Romanians don’t do small talk, but once you break through, the hospitality is unreal. A shopkeeper once invited me to his nephew’s wedding after five minutes of chatting. And the food—sour soups, smoky grilled meats, and those insane donuts filled with warm cheese. Why isn’t this place packed with tourists yet?
