Bishkek is the vibrant capital of Kyrgyzstan, home to around 900,000 residents. Nestled in the Chuy Valley near the Kyrgyz Ala-Too mountains, this former Soviet city blends Soviet-era architecture with bustling bazaars and green spaces.

The sidewalks in Bishkek are cracked and uneven, making even a short walk feel like an obstacle course. Public transport is overcrowded and unpredictable—buses show up whenever they feel like it, and good luck figuring out the routes without a local. The Soviet-era buildings have a certain grim charm, but the whole place feels stuck in the past, with little effort to maintain or modernize. Most restaurants serve the same heavy, greasy dishes, and after a few days, you'll be craving anything with flavor. Even the bazaars, usually lively in Central Asia, feel half-empty and lethargic here.

1Walking through Bishkek’s wide, tree-lined boulevards feels like stepping into a Soviet-era postcard—but with way more life. The Ala-Too Square fountains at sunset? Pure magic. And the cheap, steaming plates of laghman from little canteens near the bazaar? Unbeatable. The city’s mix of brutalist architecture and bustling green parks gives it this weirdly cool energy. I loved how easy it was to hop on a marshrutka and end up at a hidden café or some Soviet mosaic you’d never find in a guidebook. People here are so warm—more than once, a stranger pointed me in the right direction with a smile (and sometimes an impromptu history lesson). It’s not polished, but that’s what makes it real.
