Basse-Terre was a letdown—the town felt sleepy and neglected, with cracked sidewalks and faded colonial buildings that could’ve been charming but just looked rundown. The few restaurants I tried served overpriced, mediocre food, and good luck finding anything open past sunset. Public transport was nearly nonexistent, so getting around without a car was a headache. For a Caribbean destination, it lacked the energy and warmth I expected.
