The waterfront promenade in Bandar Seri Begawan is such a peaceful escape—golden mosques reflecting in the water at sunset, locals enjoying teh tarik at simple stalls. The city moves at a slower pace, but that's what makes it special. Even the water taxis bobbing along the river feel like part of the charm, not just transportation.

1Walking around Bandar Seri Begawan felt like being in a city that had given up. The streets were empty, even in the supposed downtown area, and the few cafes that were open had the same bland, overpriced noodles. Public transport was basically nonexistent—if you don’t have a car, you’re stuck waiting for the occasional unreliable bus or paying for overpriced taxis. The famous Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is beautiful, sure, but after 10 minutes, there’s nothing else to do except leave. Even the nightlife is just... nothing. Maybe it’s peaceful for some, but for me, it was just dull and inconvenient.
1Walking along the waterfront at sunset in Bandar Seri Begawan is pure magic—the golden domes of the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque glow against the sky, and the air smells faintly of spices from nearby food stalls. The city moves at a relaxed pace, but the intricate details in the Islamic architecture keep pulling your attention upward. I spent hours sipping sweet teh tarik at a riverside café, watching longboats zip across the water—it’s the kind of place where time slows down just enough to appreciate the little things. The locals here are effortlessly warm—shopkeepers chatted with me like old friends, even when I was just browsing handmade brassware at the tamu market. And the sambal? Unreal. One street vendor insisted I try his version with grilled stingray, and now I dream about it. For such a small capital, BSB packs in so much quiet charm. (Note: Population adjusted to current estimates—BSB proper is around 64k, though the metro area is larger.)
