Almaty surprised me with its mix of Soviet-era grandeur and modern energy. The view from Kok Tobe Hill at sunset, with the snow-capped Tian Shan mountains in the distance, made the cable car ride up completely worth it. I spent hours wandering the Green Bazaar, snacking on fresh dried fruits and bargaining for souvenirs—vendors were tough but good-humored. The city feels oddly cosmopolitan for Central Asia, with decent coffee shops tucked between brutalist apartment blocks.
