Spent an afternoon getting lost in the stacks at the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina – that soaring glass ceiling feels like a love letter to the city’s ancient intellectual spirit. Even the ful medame from hole-in-the-wall spots near the harbor tastes better here, eaten with the sound of fishermen mending nets nearby.

1Alexandria’s waterfront could be stunning, but the Corniche is choked with traffic and exhaust fumes—not exactly the breezy Mediterranean escape I hoped for. The historic sites feel neglected, with litter scattered around Pompey’s Pillar like no one cares. Public transport is a mess; overcrowded microbuses with no AC in the sweltering heat made getting around miserable. Even the famous seafood felt overpriced for the quality—greasy and underwhelming. Locals were either indifferent or aggressively pushy with tourists. Left feeling like the city’s glory days are long gone.
